Bhubaneswar: Ambitious redevelopment of Sriram Chandra Bhanja (SCB) Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, including proposal for a multi-level parking facility, was among key initiatives of the health and family welfare department that chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed on Tuesday.

SCB, as the state’s largest medical college, caters to thousands of patients and attendants daily. The govt plans to transform it into a world-class institution with an infrastructure boost and improved amenities.

A major highlight of the meeting was the proposal for a multi-level parking facility at SCB, aimed at easing congestion in the busy hospital zone. According to officials, the parking complex will be developed over 6.51 acres and rise to 17 floors (G+16).

Parking will be available up to the 12th floor, while the upper floors will house administrative blocks, anatomy departments, and B Pharma and D Pharma colleges. The facility will serve visitors to both SCB and Acharya Harihar Cancer Care Hospital.

To promote student well-being, the chief minister directed the inclusion of indoor games and a swimming pool in the campus design, in line with recommendations under the National Education Policy 2020. He instructed the department to prepare a detailed project report.

The meeting also reviewed progress on 13 housing towers under construction near SCB, which will provide 672 residential units and hostel accommodation for 2,244 students. Majhi stressed expediting the project.

For the Panikoili Trauma Care Centre, the CM suggested implementing the project under public-private partnership (PPP) model, prioritising central govt PSUs with hospital management expertise and involving private players where necessary.

Redevelopment plans for MKCG, Berhampur, and VIMSAR, Burla, were also discussed during the meeting. Additionally, the construction of rest houses for attendants at govt medical colleges in Cuttack, Berhampur, Burla, Sundargarh, Koraput, Baripada and Balangir was deliberated upon.
