A UK seaside town once branded the worst in the country is becoming a go-to holiday hotspot for Brits, according to new research. Seaside getaways are popular among Brits during the summer months, with go-to choices including places like Brighton, Blackpool and Margate. Some seaside towns have been slated by visitors in the past, but there i always time for things to change.

One town that was blasted by visitors for years is now becoming more attractive for seaside getaways, according to new travel research. FlixBus, a company that offers coach routes around the UK, has examined booking data, Google searches and TikTok insights to determine which areas of the UK are set to attract more visitors in 2026. The town that came out on top is Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, which was named the worst seaside town in 2023 by consumer group Which?. However, it looks like things might be turning around for this town.

FlixBus' trending destinations for 2026 were determined by search interest combined with FlixBus booking data. The study points towards Weston-super-Mare's renovated promenades and restored attractions as some of the reasons for it gaining traction.

"Weston's appeal hits the sweet spot between nostalgia and novelty," the study claims. "Travellers are craving the simple pleasure of a day by the sea, with bookings for Weston rising as people seek out wide sands and retro charms."

Weston-super-Mare was indeed a popular destination in Victorian England and throughout much of the 20th century. In the 60s and 70s, when budget travel abroad became more common, the seaside town became less appealing to many, and it somewhat fell into disrepair.

Among the top-rated tourist attractions in Weston-super-Mare is Puxton Park, which is a big draw for families with young kids as it has bumper cars, slides and soft play areas.

Meanwhile, Weston-super-Mare Beach has received praise from tourists. This long sandy beach on the Bristol Channel is one of the largest naturally occurring beaches in the UK. In summer, you'll find people strolling, sunbathing and building sandcastles here.

Other attractions in the town include the Grand Pier, which is a true taste of a retro British summer, as well as the Helicopter Museum, Steep Holm and Sand Bay Beach.

The authors of the study add: "Beyond the beach, Weston hosts pop-up markets, street art, and year-round festivals. Plus, its cinema and live-music venues cater to families, couples, and solo travellers alike, making it a great all-rounder."

As well as Weston-super-Mare, FLixBus' research found several other emerging destinations set to be staycation hotspots in 2026. They include Bridgend in South Wales, Kingston upon Hull, Stoke-on-Trent and Perth in Scotland.
