Britain is likely to be covered by layers of snow as a 557-mile blizzard covers England and Scotland. According to WXCharts maps, areas from Wick to Lincolnshire are likely to experience freezing conditions on February 20, with some parts covered under 95 cm (37 inches) of snow.

The weather maps, which are prepared using the MetDesk data, show that wintry weather will spread over several towns and cities in England and Scotland. According to the weather charts, the temperature levels will plummet to -3 °C, mostly in Scotland, leaving several areas shivering in the cold. Layers of snow will accumulate in areas such as Wick, Inverness, Fort William, Aberdeen and Glasgow, experiencing 12 inches of snow.

While most regions of Scotland and England will be covered under the snow, areas around London, Birmingham, Gloucester, Oxford, Southampton, and Plymouth will be battered by heavy rainfall, the maps show.

The Met Office's long-range forecast between February 15 and 24 reads: "Showers or longer spells of rain are expected as Atlantic low-pressure systems dominate in the vicinity of the UK.

"Some heavy rain is likely in places, probably focused on western hills, with some snow at times in the north, mainly on high ground. Strong winds are possible at times, especially around coasts.

"Temperatures will probably be near normal. Later in the period, there is a chance that drier, more settled conditions may begin to develop."

Ian Simpson from Netweather.tv wrote in the weather blog: "An ongoing sudden stratospheric warming event may also tip the balance of probabilities towards cold and potentially snowy weather in Britain through the second half of February and into March.

"Thus, there is some strong evidence to suggest that the current forecast model outputs may be more likely to verify than was the case with the easterlies that were modelled earlier.

"The caveat is that, as noted earlier, the setup that is forecast for 7-10 days' time does look marginal for snow at low levels, and probably not quite cold enough in the south."
