NEW DELHI: He slipped into the south Delhi house on Wednesday morning. There he found her alone, bludgeoned her with a lamp, raped her as she lay unconscious, and dragged her downstairs to force open a biometric safe before fleeing with cash and jewellery.

During police interrogation, the accused, a former house help, allegedly revealed chilling details in the rape and murder case of a senior bureaucrat's daughter.

The autopsy report confirmed injuries on the woman's head and body, along with abrasions and a nasal bone fracture.

The cause of death was asphyxia due to ante-mortem strangulation, which investigators believe was inflicted using a mobile phone charger cable. Sources said the accused showed no remorse during interrogation, claiming he attacked the victim because she "did not give him money."

The accused reportedly offered no explanation for the sexual assault.

Attack driven by intent to commit sexual violence and theft, say cops

The accused said he gained entry early in the morning and headed directly to the rooftop study room. She was awake and studying at that time. When the woman asked why he was in the house, he lied that her mother had told him to come and collect some pending salary.

"The encounter quickly turned violent. He attempted to overpower the woman to commit sexual assault. When she resisted, he used a study lamp to bludgeon her, rendering her unconscious. In this state, he raped her," police sources said.

The suspect then attempted to access a biometric locker in the house that required a thumbprint. He dragged the bleeding, unconscious victim down the stairs to the lower floor where the safe was located.

"He repeatedly pressed her blood-stained fingers against the sensor, but the locker failed to open; investigators believe this was because the victim had likely already succumbed to her injuries, causing her blood circulation to cease. Failing to bypass the biometric lock, he used a screwdriver to force the safe open, stealing a significant amount of cash and jewellery, which he packed into a bag found in the house," sources added.

Before fleeing, he noticed his clothes and shoes were covered in blood; he changed into a pair of trousers belonging to the victim's brother and a pair of slippers found on the premises.

Police said his criminality was fuelled by his addiction to online gambling on social gaming apps. He ran up a debt of around Rs 7 lakh.

While the suspect initially claimed his primary motive was robbery, investigators suspect the attack was premeditated and driven by an intent to commit both sexual violence and rob the place from where he was fired six weeks ago.

A year ago, the bureaucrat was looking for a house help. Police said the accused's father requested the bureaucrat to give the job to his son, who was hired for a monthly salary of Rs 20,000. He was later dismissed following misappropriation of funds and complaints from neighbours and local shopkeepers about his behaviour.

Police said he viewed it as a personal humiliation. He returned to his village in Alwar for six weeks. While he is the accused in the murder of the officer's daughter, he is also facing separate charges in Alwar for sexually assaulting a friend's wife hours before he returned to Delhi.

Police confirmed the Alwar assault victim had completed her medical examination and was set to record her statement in court. Alwar police plan to take the accused into custody for investigation.

Police have questioned the accused's father and five others.
