Pune: Maharashtra's primary and secondary schools as also junior colleges have started 34 student clubs to foster talent, creativity and critical thinking among students. The clubs will cover subjects ranging from academics and hobbies to environment, technology, competitive exams, vocational education and reading.

State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) director Rahul Rekhawar recently issued a directive to education officials and school inspectors statewide to ensure timely formation. A detailed handbook on the structure and functions of the clubs is available on the SCERT website.

The initiative is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the State Curriculum Framework 2024. It aims to promote holistic development and reduce academic stress. Every student must join at least one club that suits their interests and aptitudes.

Schools may propose additional clubs beyond the 34, subject to review by district and SCERT authorities to avoid overlap. Principals, education officers and teachers have been tasked with coordinating implementation across administrative levels.

"It is a crucial decision to move beyond rote learning. These clubs will help students explore creativity and build problem-solving skills in a structured environment," said Sunita Joshi, principal of a Pune school.

"When students collaborate in interest-based groups, they learn from each other while gaining confidence and leadership skills. We look forward to seeing how students engage with these clubs," added Rajesh Patil, Pune district education official.
