Jamshedpur: Congress and BJP workers had a heated argument and engaged in a minor scuffle in Sakchi during a protest on Thursday before the local police stepped in to defuse the tension.

It was a tense 30 minutes at the Jubilee Park-Bengal Club Street when Congress workers gathered in large numbers to protest outside the local BJP office. Congress workers were protesting the alleged misuse of the ED against its senior leaders, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The protest was planned after a New Delhi court refused to take cognisance of ED’s money laundering charges against Sonia and Rahul in the National Herald case. Saffron party workers also came out on the streets with sticks and flags as their Congress counterparts marched towards the BJP office. Both sides were carrying flags of their parties. As BJP workers attempted to snatch the party flags of Congress workers, a scuffle ensued.

As it was about to escalate, cops intervened and separated the unruly karyakartas by putting up barricades to control the situation. “We were agitating in a Gandhian way, but unruly BJP workers tried to create violence,” said East Singhbhum district president of Congress, Parvinder Singh.

Refuting the allegations, BJP Jamshedpur committee general secretary Anil Modi said, “The unruly and provoking behaviour of Congress workers angered BJP karyakartas, leading to the situation of a possible confrontation.”

Meanwhile, the traffic movement on the busy SNP area road and Jubilee Park-Bengal Club road was disrupted due to the ruckus.
