Almost half of a UK high street's shops have been condemned as "unhealthy" by shocking new research. St Peter's Street is one of Derby's busiest roads and has been dubbed the "unhealthiest" high street in the UK by Online Pharmacy Chemist4U.

Locals walking just 0.2 miles down the length of St Peter's Street will be tempted by 65 unhealthy shops.

46.1% of stores were found to be fast food outlets, ice cream parlours, confectioneries, tortilla shops or bakeries. This comes as government data reveals a 59% increase in takeaways on high streets in the UK from 2014 to 2024.

Derby City Council have hit out at Chemist4U, calling the research "flawed" and saying that "all of the streets mentioned are major high streets, so of course they're going to have a high number of catering outlets to appeal to visitors."

"Nonetheless, we are exploring ways we may be able to limit the proliferation of uses like takewaways on key streets", they added.

According to the study, the second unhealthiest high street in the UK is Hales Street in Coventry, with 42.3% of stores within a 500m radius being unhealthy. This means that for every five shops you walk past, two are selling meals that could be bad for your health. In third is Southend-on-Sea's central High Street, with 38.1% of stores being unhealthy.

London's famous Oxford Street was crowned the UK's healthiest high street. Out its 982 stores, only 173 were flagged as unhealthy.

Chemist4U is one of the UK's largest online pharmacies. One of their flagship products is weight-loss jab Mounjaro, which mimics gut hormones in order to reduce the user's appetite. Their research also highlighted that 64% of adults in England are estimated to be overweight or living with obesity.

Eating a lot of junk food can a serious problem for your health - greasy takeaways cause high cholesterol, and lead to weight gain, and even increase your risk of a stroke.
