Tragic: Faridabad Teen Ends Life After Being Blackmailed With Deepfake Videos of Sisters

A horrifying case of cybercrime has emerged from Old Faridabad, where a 19-year-old college student from Baselwa Colony allegedly took his own life after being blackmailed with AI-generated deepfake images and videos of him and his sisters. The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, has shocked the local community and highlighted the growing dangers of digital extortion using artificial intelligence.

Blackmail and Extortion Threats

According to police, two unidentified individuals had been harassing the victim for over ten days. The accused allegedly hacked into the student’s phone and began threatening him through a messaging app, demanding ₹20,000 to prevent the circulation of fabricated visuals.

“They had created morphed pictures and videos of the victim along with his sisters," a senior officer from the NIT police station said, confirming that a case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the culprits behind the crime.

The Tragic Incident

Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, identified as Rahul Bharti, was under immense psychological stress due to the ongoing threats. On Saturday evening, he allegedly consumed poison inside his room around 7 pm. “His family members immediately took him to a local hospital,” said Yashpal Yadav, Public Relations Officer of the Faridabad Police, adding that the student succumbed during treatment.

Investigation Underway

Police have filed an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are examining the victim’s phone, chat records, and social media activity to trace how the AI-generated content was created and shared. “We are trying to ascertain their identities, and they will soon be apprehended,” Yadav said.

Family’s Account and Suspects

Family members told police that Rahul had been unusually quiet and withdrawn for days before his death. His father, Manoj Bharti, said Rahul had lost interest in daily life, spoke very little, and spent most of his time alone. When the family checked his phone after the tragedy, they discovered messages from a man named ‘Sahil’, who had allegedly created and shared morphed nude images of Rahul and demanded ₹20,000 to stop their spread.

In one of the final chat exchanges, Sahil allegedly threatened to upload the images online if his demand was not met and even suggested how Rahul could end his life. Police are also investigating the role of another person, ‘Neeraj Bharti’, with whom Rahul reportedly spoke shortly before his death. A complaint has been filed against both suspects, and authorities say more arrests are likely soon.

The case underscores the alarming misuse of AI technology for blackmail and highlights the urgent need for stronger cybercrime safeguards in India.
