Two killed, couple injured in drunk driving crash near Saswad

Pune: Two men were killed and a couple sustained severe injuries after their motorcycles were hit by a car on a sharp turn on Saswad-Vir Road near Saswad, about 30 km from Pune, on Saturday afternoon.

Police sub-inspector Parmeshwar Godse of Saswad police told TOI, "The car driver, a civil engineer, 30, currently residing at Hadapsar and originally from Goregaon, Mumbai, was driving the car under the influence of alcohol.

He has been arrested on the charge of causing death by negligence and drunk driving."

The police have identified the deceased as Ravindra Kakade, 65, and his relative Mahendra Kakade, 53, both from Panagare village in Purandar taluka. The injured, Tukaram Poman, 60, and his wife Surekha, 50, of Pimple village in Purandar taluka, are undergoing treatment in a nearby village.

Godse said that the accident happened around 8 am on Saturday, when the engineer and his friend were driving towards Saswad from Vir.

On the sharp turn of the road, the engineer did not notice two motorcycles coming from the opposite side and knocked them. "Ravindra Kakade and Mahendra Kakade were killed on the spot, while Poman and his wife sustained severe injuries," Godse said.

The officer said that the police found the car driver was drunk. "We have arrested him. He was produced before the court on Sunday and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days and sent to Yerawada Central Prison," the officer said.
