UK mobile network gives all customers a vital free mobile upgrade

All customers of a popular mobile network in the UK have been given access to a very useful mobile upgrade that anyone with a compatible handset can take advantage of right away. For some people, it could prove a great quality of life improvement.

Lyca Mobile has confirmed its network now supports Wi-Fi calling across all of its mobile plans. Wi-Fi calling technology allows compatible mobile phones and smartphones to place calls over a Wi-Fi connection rather than the 2G, 4G or 5G cellular network.

This is incredibly useful if you have weak mobile signal in your home, as you can stay connected to your home Wi-Fi network when you're in, and not worry about missing an important call. It also means you can make calls more reliably.

Calls made over Wi-Fi can often be of better quality than calls placed over legacy 2G networks.

"Wi-Fi Calling is particularly beneficial in environments where traditional mobile coverage can be affected, such as office buildings, tube lines, or other indoor locations," Lyca Mobile said in a press release.

"By seamlessly switching to an available Wi-Fi network, the feature helps ensure uninterrupted communication."

Any calls made over Wi-Fi will count towards customers' specific mobile plans, though the service cannot be used for international calls or roaming data. Customers will only be able to use Wi-Fi calling in the UK, too.

Lyca Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that leases signal from EE. Its SIM only plans are very competitively priced, with an unlimited data SIM costing just £12.50 per month for the first three months at the time of writing.

ISPreview reported that as of 2022, Lyca Mobile had 1.7 million subscribers at the end of 2022, so this is a change that could positively impact more than a million Brits.

"At Lyca Mobile, we are focused on making everyday connectivity as reliable and seamless as possible for our customers," said Holly Flintoft, Head of Digital Sales UK.

"By enabling Wi-Fi Calling across all our mobile plans, we are taking another step in improving everyday connectivity for our customers.

Whether at home, at work or in places where mobile signal can fluctuate, Wi-Fi Calling helps ensure people stay connected when it matters."

You may have to turn on Wi-Fi calling to get it to work. Head to the settings app of your phone and seek out the Wi-Fi calling setting and turn it on. Lyca Mobile said it's available on the "latest Apple, Samsung and Android phones".
