Fresh weather maps show a sweeping band of snow stretching over 600 miles from northern Scotland down to the south coast of England overnight between March 4 and March 5. Maps from forecaster WXCharts show a north-to-south corridor of wintry showers running from around Aberdeenshire through the Midlands and into parts of the South West.

Measuring from the northernmost significant accumulations near Aberdeenshire down through the spine of Britain to Devon and the south coast, the snowy stretch spans around 650 miles. While not continuous everywhere, the wintry corridor runs in a broad arc across much of mainland Britain.

The snow depth chart shows 20 counties with measurable snow cover. The most affected parts will, as usual, be in Scotland, particularly in central parts. The ECMWF chart shows depths up to 52cm, slightly north-west of Dundee and west of Aberdeen.

More surprisingly, snow is also shown further south across parts of the West Midlands, Devon and even Hampshire, where lighter coverings of around 1-2cm appear on the map.

While the lowest temperatures are set to dip to around -1C in parts of Scotland, whereas in London it will be around 5C.

Separately, the Met Office long-range forecast reads: "Changeable conditions are expected, with Atlantic frontal systems spreading across the UK, interspersed with drier and brighter interludes. Rainfall will typically be heaviest in the northwest, with much less reaching sheltered eastern areas. Some snow is possible across high ground in the north. Drier and more settled periods perhaps become more prolonged later in the period, especially in the east. Winds will probably be strong at times, with a risk of gales. Temperatures are likely to be near to or slightly above average."
