Varanasi: Student found dead in IIT-BHU hostel, cardiac arrest suspected

VARANASI: M Tech (mechanical) student, Anoop Singh Chauhan, 22, native of Azamgarh district, was found dead in his room in PC Ray hostel of IIT-BHU on Wednesday morning.

After studying until late at night, he died in his sleep. Doctors suspected cardiac arrest as cause of death. His family took the body after postmortem. The institute condoled his demise. IIT-BHU chief proctor Dr Sanjay Singh said that on being alerted by hostel inmates, an ambulance was arranged and Chauhan was rushed to SSL Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police were informed and Chauhan's family arrived on hearing about the incident.

Lanka police inspector Raj Kumar Sharma said the hostel room was inspected and body sent for postmortem after arrival of the deceased's father, Vinod Singh Chauhan, a legal practitioner in Azamgarh. There was panic in the hostel after Anoop did not wake even as his classmates headed for an exam.

The hostel inmatesgave him CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and rushed him to SSL Hospital by university ambulance. Doctors declared him dead, suspecting his death was caused by cardiac arrest. The hostel inmates and his room partner said following dinner at the hostel mess, they all returned to their rooms around 11 pm on Tuesday. After studying till about 3 am, they all went to sleep. Around 6:30 am, when his friends tried to wake him for an exam, he did not respond, they said.

On reaching the institute, his father, Vinod Singh Chauhan, said he had spoken to his son the previous night and he did not seem to have any health issues, and did not have any prior medical complications either.

The institute in its message, deeply mourned the demise, mentioning what a sincere and dedicated a student he was.
