The accident involved two cars that collided while travelling on a road leading to the old Ahmedabad highway. The group of six friends in one vehicle had just attended a Mehfil-e-Milad programme and decided to step out for tea. What followed was a sequence of moments captured on a mobile phone that has since cast a harsh light on reckless driving and ignored warnings.

A nearly nine-minute video from inside the car shows Sher Mohammad (19) behind the wheel, smoking a cigarette as loud music and a video play on the car’s screen. The speedometer is clearly visible at several points. As the needle crosses 100 kmph and then touches 120 kmph, friends sitting around him repeatedly urge him to slow down.

“Haath hatao,” one friend says, asking him to move his hand, before zooming in on the speedometer. Moments later, another voice warns that the car is nearing 140 kmph. The driver shows no sign of easing off.

Seconds later, the car swerves. A scream cuts through the music, followed by a violent crash. Glass shatters. The screen goes dark, but the phone continues recording.

For nearly 40 seconds, there is only static. Then groans of pain fill the audio. The cries continue for more than two minutes, growing weaker and more desperate. One of the survivors can be heard pleading with passersby for help.

“Bachalo bhayya… mummy… bachalo,” he cries. “Main andar phansa hua hoon, mereko saans nahin aa rahi hai (I’m stuck inside, I can’t breathe).”

Four passengers from the speeding car Mohammad Ayan (17), Adil Qureshi (14), Sher Mohammad (19), and Ghulam Khwaja (17) lost their lives. Two others in the same vehicle were seriously injured. The second car, which was heading towards Gujarat, had four occupants, all of whom sustained injuries.

Officials confirmed that the two surviving friends from the first car and the four occupants of the other vehicle are currently undergoing treatment.

The video has sparked outrage and renewed concern over speeding, distracted driving, and the deadly consequences of ignoring basic road safety especially when lives are placed in the hands of someone who refuses to slow down.
