Woman dies by suicide in Bengaluru over alleged dowry harassment
Bengaluru: A 35-year-old woman, the daughter of a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector, allegedly died by suicide by hanging after being harassed for dowry by her husband and in-laws. The incident occurred in Abbigere in Soladevanahalli.
The deceased has been identified as Sushma, a resident of Abbigere. Police have arrested her husband Puneeth Kumar in connection with the case and are questioning him. Sushma, who was a software engineer, had married Puneeth Kumar five years ago, and the couple has a son.
According to reports, Sushma was allegedly assaulted by her husband Puneeth Kumar and her mother-in-law over dowry-related issues. Distressed by the harassment, she reportedly ended her life by hanging. After the incident, her husband and mother-in-law admitted her to Sapthagiri Hospital.
When Sushma’s parents reached the hospital after being informed, they noticed injury marks on her cheek and neck. Based on a complaint filed by her father, retired ASI T.D. Prabhakar Murthy, police arrested Puneeth Kumar.
Retired ASI had arranged marriage with dowry
Sushma was the daughter of retired ASI Prabhakar Murthy. Five years ago, he had arranged her marriage with Puneeth Kumar. At the time of the wedding, he had reportedly given Rs 10 lakh as dowry, 45 grams of gold jewellery and a car, and conducted the marriage in a grand manner. A case has been registered at the Soladevanahalli Police Station.
