World's largest football stadium will hold 115,000 people and have gardens inside ground
The World Cup final could be held in a colossal Moroccan stadium with a capacity of 115,000 spectators. This is part of the North African nation's preparations to co-host the 2030 tournament alongside Spain and Portugal.
The World Cup in 2026 will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the grand finale set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium, home to NFL teams the New York Giants and New York Jets. As football fans worldwide gear up for this event, FIFA is already planning for the next tournament in 2030. The World Cup in 2030 will make history as the first to be hosted by three countries from two distinct regions.
Morocco hopes to secure the prestigious honour of having its Grand Stade Hassan II chosen as the venue for the final. The proposed stadium is set to become the world's largest football arena, with a design that pays homage to traditional Moroccan culture.
The structure, inspired by the local 'moussem' social gathering, resembles a massive tent and stands out amidst the surrounding forest landscape.
The stadium's designers, Populous, worked in collaboration with Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi and have revealed that this impressive venue will feature three tiers on each end of the stadium bowl, each capable of accommodating 29,500 people - equivalent to the full capacity of some Championship grounds.
The designers said: "The venue will be fully compliant with FIFA regulations, with the ability to host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, following Morocco's selection as a joint host nation alongside Spain and Portugal."
Spanning the stadium's two ends are five hospitality tiers, accommodating more than 12,000 seats designated for VVIP, VIP, and box guests. A Royal box has also been incorporated, suitable for any monarch wishing to enjoy the sporting spectacle.
Natural garden features have been integrated throughout the stadium, elevated above ground level to give visitors the sensation of being immersed in nature as they head to their seats.
The designers added: "The gardens create an extraordinary spatial experience - an oasis of greenery under the translucent roof canopy. This effect is further enhanced by a series of botanical gardens at ground level beneath the outer edges of the canopy."
Regarding ongoing construction, they said: "Preparation for groundworks is underway on a 100-hectare site in the town of El Mansouria, in the province of Benslimane, 38 km north of Casablanca, after public financing was approved in October 2023."
