Matt Smith was in for a shock when he responded to a "bovine emergency" in The Yorkshire Vet.

The vet was called by sibling farmers Marshall and Angela, whose cow was having difficulty delivering her calf in the latest episode of the Channel 5 show, which was the last in the current series. The calf was awkwardly positioned, making for a challenging birth, but Matt hoped to help the cow give birth naturally rather than resorting to a caesarean, which would have been "a big risk", reports the Mirror.

After successfully delivering the first calf, he discovered that the mother cow was also carrying another one. "Oh she's a twin, we've got a second one - crikey!" Matt exclaimed.

In the episode, the vet dashed off after receiving a call, informing viewers: "They have got a cow who is calving and Marshall has put his hand in and is just not quite sure what is going on."

"Nine times out of 10, when any farmer puts his arm in, they have got two legs and a head," worried-looking farmer Marshall explained. "There is none of that today."

After examining the animal to try to work out what was happening, Matt could not feel a head but did feel feet. However, due to the position of the animal, he couldn't extract it.

He managed to get the cow up on its feet, telling the owners: "We'll see if we have got room and can calve her normally which is always the plan because caesareans, well, they are a big risk, and we don't want to do one unless we have to."

They ultimately looped a rope over the baby animal's head in an attempt to pull it through, with the farmers enduring a nerve-wracking wait while Matt got to work.

"Good lass!" he exclaimed as the calf's legs finally began to emerge.

Seconds after the baby arrived, the vet discovered the cow was also carrying another one. The second calf was also in a complicated position but fortunately was delivered more easily than the first.

"That is the best sight to see, two live ones and a live mum," said Matt as the new arrivals lay on the straw while mum looked on. "Makes all the aching and pain worth it."

"I think they are possibly the biggest set of twins I think I have seen for a long time," said the vet.

"It was a real, real tough one, was that. Neither of those calves wanted to come out because they were clearly too toasty inside. But now we have got them out they are doing really well, mum is doing well as well and there really is not a better feeling."

The episode marked the final instalment in the current series of The Yorkshire Vet.

The Yorkshire Vet airs on Channel 5.
