Sehwag debunks viral video, defends Srikkanth amid bribery allegation controversy

Newspoint

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has issued a clarification after a widely circulated video appeared to show him accusing Kris Srikkanth of involvement in a bribery demand during his Under-19 days. The clip, which gained traction across social media platforms, suggested that Sehwag’s selection for the India U-19 side was contingent on a payment of INR 5 lakh.

In response, Sehwag released the original version of the video, asserting that the viral clip had been selectively edited. He maintained that the alleged demand did not come from Srikkanth himself but from an unnamed individual associated with him at the time. The clarification aimed to address what he described as a misrepresentation of his remarks. Sehwag wrote,

"Editing acchi thi, intent galat tha (Editing was good, intent was wrong). I clearly said the guy who was with Srikanth called my coach, but it has been edited to make it sound like Srikanth ji called. Sharing both clips real and fake so that there is no confusion. Srikanth ji is genuinely a wonderful and very fair person."

Clarification counters viral narrative

The controversy originated from a segment in which Sehwag recounted an episode from his early career. The edited version removed contextual qualifiers, leading to a direct association between Srikkanth and the alleged demand. Sehwag’s response focused on restoring that context, while explicitly defending Srikkanth’s integrity.

The incident highlights recurring concerns around selective editing of public figures’ statements, particularly when archival or anecdotal accounts are repurposed without full context. Sehwag’s decision to share both versions of the video was intended to demonstrate the extent of alteration.

At no point in his clarification did Sehwag suggest any formal complaint or investigation related to the incident. Instead, the emphasis remained on correcting the narrative and preventing reputational damage.

Background adds context to remarks

Sehwag represented India in the 1998 Under-19 World Cup as a spin-bowling all-rounder. He featured alongside players such as Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik and Saeed Anwar during the tournament, which was won by England national cricket team.

He later built a distinguished international career, amassing 8586 runs in Tests and 8273 in ODIs, along with appearances in India’s victorious campaigns at the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup. Comparisons between Sehwag and Srikkanth have often been drawn due to their aggressive opening styles.

The clarification concludes the immediate debate around the viral clip, with Sehwag reiterating his stance on the matter while distancing Srikkanth from the claims.
