Wanindu Hasaranga Ruled Out of T20 World Cup 2026, 31-Year-Old Spinner Named as Replacement
Sri Lanka has suffered a major loss in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after their top bowler Wanindu Hasaranga sustained an injury which will prevent him from playing in the tournament. The leg-spinner picked up a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s opening match against Ireland.
The bowler completed his full outing in that game yet his injury became worse as time went on.
MRI Scan Confirms Serious Injury
According to the ESPNcricinfo article on the matter, Hasaranga had an MRI scan on Tuesday. From the scan results, it was clear that there was a significant tear in his left hamstring. It was decided that Hasaranga should not participate in the tournament by the Sri Lanka Cricket medical staff after realizing that he needed rest.
The decision aimed to stop all further injuries while providing the spinner sufficient time to reach total recovery. This news has come as a major blow for Sri Lanka, especially as Hasaranga is one of their most important players in T20 cricket.
Dushan Hemantha Named as Replacement
The Sri Lanka Cricket board declared a substitute player after Hasaranga received his injury diagnosis. The team selected Dushan Hemantha who is 31 years old as an exact positional replacement for the squad.
Hemantha is a leg-spin bowler who plays domestic cricket matches for Sri Lanka on a regular basis. He is expected to join the Sri Lanka team for their upcoming T20 World Cup match.
The team management hopes that Hemantha will replace Hasaranga to maintain the team’s bowling strength throughout the remaining contests.

Hasaranga sustained his injury during Sri Lanka’s game against Ireland. The bowler entered the match during the 8th over. He experienced hip discomfort after starting his first over when he threw two pitches.
The team physio came onto the field to check on him. Hasaranga completed his overs before he left the playing field. This raised early concerns among the team and fans.
He returned to the game and played all four overs.
Injury Problems Continue for Hasaranga
Hasaranga has been one of Sri Lanka’s best players in T20 cricket but injuries have troubled him for the past few years. He missed multiple important tournaments throughout 2023 because of his health problems.
He missed the 2023 Asia Cup as well as the ODI World Cup because of a Grade 3 hamstring tear.
The hamstring injury has prevented him from playing despite receiving last-minute medical clearance.
Tough Road Ahead for Sri Lanka
The absence of Hasaranga makes it more difficult for Sri Lanka to qualify for the Super 8 stage. The team badly needs his ability to take wickets at crucial moments of the game.
Theekshana must now fulfill greater duties throughout the spin bowling positions. Sri Lanka will compete against Oman on February 12 in Pallekele before their upcoming matches with Australia on February 16 and Zimbabwe on February 19.
To secure their position for the next round the team must achieve victories in two of their upcoming three matches.
