Watch: Washington Sundar Drops a Sitter of Virat Kohli, RCB Star Makes GT Pay Heavily

Newspoint

An important moment in the 34th match of IPL 2026 in the clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

RCB were in chase of 206 runs when GT lost an early opportunity as Washington Sundar dropped the catch of none other than Virat Kohli on the very first ball he faced. Mohammed Siraj bowls a length ball which Kohli tried to slog straight to mid-wicket, a simple catch to be taken at that position but Sundar went on to drop a sitter and giving a life to Kohli.

Washington Sundar Drops a Major Chance

It was a major chance dropped by Washington Sundar at mid-wicket and that opportunity gave a life to Kohli when he was at 0. This proved out to be a big blow for GT and as most of us would agree such chances in high-pressure chases do not usually go unpunished, this was exactly one of those chances.

Sundar who made 19* from 12 balls and guided GT home also made a terrible mistake in fielding as a big chance went begging in the second ball of the innings.

A video of the catch drop went viral and cricket fans heavily reacted to this miss.

Earlier in the evening Gujarat Titans posted a big total of 205/3 on the board in 20 overs with Sai Sudarsan being the hero with the bat scoring a scintillating century (100 off 58 balls), while captain Shubman Gill (32) and Jos Buttler (25) also contributed. Contributions from Sundar (19 from 12 balls) and Holder(10) helped them cross the 200 run mark.

Virat Kohli Makes GT Pay After Lifeline

Having been handed an additional lease of life, Kohli certainly made the most of it. He seemed to play with intent and came hard at the Gujarat Titans bowlers right from the outset. By the time of writing, he was on 46 off just 26 balls with the help of 6 boundaries and 1 maximum to his name, on a strike rate just shy of 177.

He shared a solid partnership of 39 off 19 deliveries with Devdutt Padikkal, who had smashed 26 off 14 deliveries. Jacob Bethell was previously out to Siraj for 14.

RCB was 88/1 at the end of 8.2 overs and still needed 118 off 70 deliveries to keep their chase well on track. Kohli's charge after the drop undoubtedly turned the tables for RCB.

In matches like these, a dropped chance can be absolutely fatal and Sundar dropping Kohli certainly gave him the life he required and the star for RCB made the Gujarat Titans pay for that with vengeance.
