GATE 2026 exam begins tomorrow: Check reporting time, shifts, barred items and documents you should carry
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 will begin from Friday, February 7, with lakhs of engineering graduates set to appear for the national-level exam across India. Conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, the computer-based test will be held on February 7, 8, 14 and 15, 2026, at designated examination centres nationwide.

GATE 2026 exam schedule and shifts
GATE 2026 will be conducted in two shifts on each exam day.
The forenoon shift will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
The afternoon shift will take place from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
Candidates should rely only on their admit card to confirm the exact exam date, shift timing and centre address allotted to them.
GATE 2026 exam reporting time and entry guidelines
Students are advised to reach the examination centre at least 60 to 90 minutes before the reporting time mentioned on the admit card. Biometric verification and document checks will be conducted before entry, which may take time.
Late entry is generally not allowed after the gate closing time. Candidates are advised to plan their travel in advance to avoid delays and last-minute panic on exam day.
Documents required at the exam centre
Candidates must carry the following documents on the day of the exam:
A printed hard copy of the GATE 2026 admit card on A4-size paper, with a clearly visible photograph and personal details.
One original and valid photo identity proof such as Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, driving licence or PAN card.
The photo ID must be the same as the one used during registration. Photocopies or digital versions of ID proofs will not be accepted.
Candidates should also read the admit card instructions carefully to check whether they are required to carry a passport-size photograph.
Items barred inside the exam hall
Several items are strictly prohibited inside the examination centre. These include mobile phones, smart watches, personal calculators, books, notes, bags and all electronic devices. Carrying any kind of study material into the exam hall is not allowed.
A virtual calculator will be provided on the computer screen during the exam. Rough sheets will be given at the centre, and candidates must write their name and registration number on them before use.
Students are advised to wear simple, comfortable clothing and follow instructions given by the invigilators at all times. Any violation of rules or misconduct can lead to disqualification.
