India evacuates nationals from Iran through Armenia and Azerbaijan as West Asia tensions continue
More than 550 Indian nationals, including 284 pilgrims, have crossed into Armenia from Iran as part of India’s evacuation efforts amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. Another 90 Indians have crossed into Azerbaijan with support from Indian missions in the region.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Indian diplomatic missions helped citizens complete necessary travel and border formalities during the evacuation process.
The government said the Indian Embassy in Tehran continues to function normally while authorities monitor the security situation in the region.
Officials said evacuation operations are being coordinated through diplomatic channels as the conflict situation in West Asia continues.
MEA Joint Secretary for the Gulf region, Aseem Mahajan, said authorities are maintaining round-the-clock assistance for Indians in the region.
He said, “We closely continue to monitor the situation in West Asia. The control room continues to function to provide support to the diaspora.”
The government also said that a large number of Indian citizens have already returned from the region since tensions began earlier this year.
According to the MEA, 228,000 Indians have returned from the West Asian region since February 28 as part of ongoing assistance and evacuation efforts.
