Renowned playback singer Arijit Singh has revealed why he is stepping back from taking on new Bollywood playback singing assignments, while making it clear that he is not retiring from music altogether. In his announcement marking the New Year, Arijit expressed deep gratitude to his fans for their love and support over the years, saying he has enjoyed a “wonderful journey” as a playback vocalist. However, the singer said he would no longer accept new film song assignments, marking the end of his era as a regular Bollywood playback singer. Despite this, he stressed that he will continue to make and create music in different formats.

Addressing Arijit Singh retirement rumours, the singer outlined multiple reasons behind his decision rather than pointing to a single factor. One key reason, he explained, is that he tends to feel creatively restless when repeating similar formats and arrangements. He noted that during live performances, he often reinterprets and rearranges his songs to keep them fresh, reflecting a creative spirit that thrives on variety and innovation.

Another important factor is his desire to be inspired by new voices. Arijit said he wants to listen to emerging singers who can motivate him with their work, adding that he hopes to make space for fresh talent while drawing creative stimulation from an evolving music landscape instead of remaining in a familiar loop.

Crucially, the singer also spoke about his wish to return to the roots of his musical training. He expressed a strong interest in reconnecting with Indian classical music, revisiting the foundational styles and techniques that shaped his early artistic development. He made it clear that his passion for good music remains unchanged and that this shift is about artistic growth rather than stepping away from music.

Arijit Singh also assured fans that he will honour all existing commitments, meaning some previously recorded songs may still be released in the coming months. He emphasised that stepping back from Bollywood playback singing does not mean an absence from music, as he plans to continue writing, composing and performing on his own terms through independent and personal projects.

Industry observers believe Arijit’s announcement marks a rare moment in Bollywood music. As one of the most consistent and influential voices in Hindi film soundtracks over the past decade, his soulful singing has shaped the emotional core of numerous blockbuster films. His decision to pause regular playback work opens doors for new talent while allowing him to focus on other dimensions of his musical journey.

Clarifying his position further, Arijit reassured fans that he is not disappearing from the music scene. Instead, he is shifting gears - exploring new creative avenues, reconnecting with classical traditions, and ensuring that the music he creates next truly reflects where he stands as an artist today.
