Government Bans 5 OTT Platforms for Allegedly Streaming Obscene and Explicit Content
In a decisive action under the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021 and provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Government of India has blocked access to five OTT platforms accused of streaming obscene material without adequate safeguards.
According to official sources, MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu were identified as hosting content that allegedly violated norms related to decency and compliance. Internet service providers have been instructed to disable access to these platforms following due legal process.
The IT Rules, 2021 empower regulators to address unlawful or harmful online material and place obligations on digital intermediaries to follow content guidelines, including age-based classifications and grievance mechanisms. Section 69A of the IT Act grants authority to block online resources when they are found to contravene Indian law.
This latest action follows an earlier crackdown in July 2025, when the MIB ordered the blocking of 25 OTT platforms for allegedly streaming vulgar and pornographic content, including platforms like Ullu and ALTBalaji. Those apps were also found to have ignored previous warnings and continued to distribute objectionable material.
Government officials say the current measures aim to uphold public decency, protect national interests, and ensure enforcement of ethical standards in digital spaces. Industry bodies and multiple ministries were consulted before the move, reflecting a broad regulatory approach to online streaming content.
