Guidelines Leave No Room For Unauthorised Deletion

According to the Election Commission of India’s procedure for the special revision, Booth Level Officers must carry out a door-to-door check of the voters’ list. Any deletion, including the removal of deceased voters, cannot be done independently by the officer. The family or another voter from the same polling booth must file Form 7 to report a death. Officials are only authorised to verify details, not initiate deletion without a formal application, as explained by poll body sources.

Mohammad Tafiz Uddin, the BLO assigned to the area where Zubeen Garg’s family used to vote, was carrying out the standard verification process. When he reached the singer’s name on the voter list, he made a personal and heartfelt gesture. The Election Commission of India has initiated the Special Revision of the electoral rolls in Assam ahead of the assembly elections next year. Using 1 January 2026 as the qualifying date, the revision mandates comprehensive house-to-house verification. Unlike the Special Intensive Revision, this process does not require electors to produce documents to confirm their eligibility. The goal is to update the rolls efficiently while ensuring accuracy ahead of the polls.
