Jaya Bachchan Opens Up On Marriage With Amitabh, Jokes ‘He Might Call It The Biggest Mistake Of His Life’
Jaya Bachchan has always been known for her honesty, and her latest conversation on Mojo Story once again showed why. Speaking about how relationships have changed over the years, the veteran actor shared refreshing insights about her five-decade-long marriage with Amitabh Bachchan including a playful remark that he might even call it “the biggest mistake of his life.”
Jaya Bachchan’s candid take on marriage
Jaya Bachchan explained that her views on relationships and marriage have evolved significantly in the past 52 years. She emphasised that a legal stamp does not define the depth or strength of a bond a point she illustrated with humour and clarity.
Referring to marriage, she said, “Delhi ka ladoo hai, khao toh mushkil, na khao toh mushkil.” She added that people should “just enjoy life” instead of rushing to make a relationship official. Jaya even revealed that she and Amitabh didn’t sign their marriage register initially. “We didn’t even sign the register in old times… Later on, we found out that we had to sign it, and we signed the register after what I don’t know how many years of our marriage. That means we were living illegally,” she joked.
Her thoughts on Amitabh’s perspective
When asked whether Amitabh Bachchan shares her views on marriage, Jaya responded with her trademark wit:
“I have not asked him. He might say that ‘biggest mistake of my life’, but I don’t want to hear that.”
Despite the light-hearted tone, the actor made it clear that her love for Amitabh has only deepened over time.
“Do you have to dig into old wounds? I have been married for the last 52 years to the same man. Isse jada pyaar main nahin kar sakti hoon,” she said, adding that for her, it truly was love at first sight.
A love story that began on film sets
Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan first met during the filming of Guddi. Amitabh later fell in love with her while working on Ek Nazar (1972). The couple married in 1973 and are parents to Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan. Even after more than five decades, their relationship continues to draw admiration and now, renewed interest thanks to Jaya’s frank reflections.
