Karan Johar Goes on a Week-Long Digital Detox, Says No Scrolling or DMs
Filmmaker Karan Johar has decided to take a break from social media. On Monday evening, the producer-director announced via Instagram Stories that he will be stepping away from the platform for about a week as part of a digital detox.
Sharing his decision, Karan Johar revealed that he would completely disconnect from Instagram during this period, avoiding scrolling, posts, and direct messages. “Digital Detox for a week! No doom scrolling! No DMs! No posts! May the universe give me the strength to stay away!!!!” he wrote.
Before starting his break, Karan posted a final update featuring actress Alia Bhatt. The video wished everyone a Happy Republic Day, marking his last appearance on Instagram before going offline.
In the days leading up to his announcement, Karan Johar had been vocal about recent developments in the Hindi film industry. He praised the success of Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar and Sunny Deol’s Border 2 , calling them back-to-back mega hits and stating that their strong box office performance proved that Bollywood was “back.” He emphasised that films that emotionally connect with audiences continue to succeed commercially.
Karan also recently came to the defense of Varun Dhawan after the actor faced intense online trolling over his expressions in Border 2. Varun was targeted for his smile in the film’s trailer and songs, with social media users questioning his suitability for a large-scale war drama.
Defending Varun through his Instagram Stories, Karan criticised what he described as hollow social media outrage and clickbait-driven commentary. “Has to be said… the reason why it’s called a virtual world! Real will always score and prove the noise on social media as defunct,” he wrote. This message was widely seen as a strong show of support for Varun Dhawan.
