Director Mani Shankar’s Son Arrested in Hyderabad After Allegedly Assaulting Home Guard in Road Rage
A road rage incident in Hyderabad has led to the arrest of Prem Shankar, the son of filmmaker Mani Shankar, after he allegedly obstructed police officials and assaulted a home guard who was trying to manage traffic.
According to police reports, the incident occurred near a busy junction in Banjara Hills, one of the city’s prominent areas. Prem Shankar was driving an electric vehicle when the car suddenly stopped in the middle of the road due to a drained battery. The stalled vehicle created a traffic disruption at the junction, prompting traffic police and home guards to step in and assist.
Officials reportedly asked him to cooperate and move the vehicle aside so that traffic could flow smoothly. The home guards also offered help to push the car away from the main road. However, instead of cooperating, Prem Shankar allegedly refused to step out of the vehicle despite repeated requests from the officers.
Police say the situation escalated when the home guards attempted to remove him from the car so the vehicle could be cleared from the road. During this process, Prem Shankar allegedly pushed a home guard and obstructed officials from performing their duties, which led to a scuffle at the scene.
Authorities also suspect that he may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. However, since the arrest occurred two days after the confrontation, police said they would conduct tests to determine whether he was driving while intoxicated.
After the altercation, Prem Shankar reportedly left the scene, prompting police to track him down using the vehicle’s registration details. Officers later located him at a residence in the city and placed him under arrest.
A case has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for obstructing public servants and assaulting officials on duty. These charges relate to using force or causing harm while preventing government officials from carrying out their responsibilities.
The incident has drawn attention partly because of Prem Shankar’s connection to filmmaker Mani Shankar, who is known for directing films such as “Tango Charlie” and “16 December.” While the director himself has not publicly commented on the arrest, the case has sparked discussion on social media about public behaviour during traffic incidents and the consequences of obstructing law enforcement.
Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will depend on the evidence gathered during the probe.
