Martin Short’s Wedding Faux Pas: How He Almost Ruined Selena Gomez’s Big Moment

The 75-year-old actor shared the story during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on January 21. According to PEOPLE, the mix-up occurred at Gomez and Blanco’s wedding reception in Santa Barbara, California, held last September.

Recalling the evening, Short described the wedding as flawless, until the reception. “The wedding was perfect, and it was beautiful… So everything was perfect, except the night of the reception,” he told the audience, before admitting that the issue was, in fact, “the wedding cake.”

Short explained that the reception featured large tents with smaller lounge areas at the back. He was seated with his Only Murders in the Building co-stars, including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd, when he noticed a cake placed near their section. Assuming that each lounge area had its own cake, Short decided to serve some to his friends.

With a fork in hand, and possibly after a cocktail or two, he encouraged Steve Martin not to leave without having cake. Short then casually cut into it, only for the people around him to suddenly scream, “Marty!” Realisation struck instantly: it was the wedding cake.

A photo of the cake was shown during the show, revealing a noticeable slice missing from one side. “I tried to fix it with a fork,” Short joked, adding that the incident happened about an hour before the cake was meant to be presented.

The wedding team was quickly called in, and the chef worked to repair the damage. “Then they did surgery,” Short said humorously, noting that the cake ultimately looked beautiful, albeit with “a little work done.” He also revealed that the group tried to keep the mishap from Selena Gomez. “I kept saying, ‘Guys, we can’t let Selena know,’” he shared.

Selena Gomez later announced her wedding to Benny Blanco in September by sharing a series of photos on Instagram.
