Michael Jackson Biopic Faces Criticism Ahead of Release

Michael Jackson’s upcoming film is already creating buzz and it is for the wrong reasons especially from film critics, who describe the film as a 'whitewash, providing a much sanitised version of his early life and career’. The film is set to show Jackson’s journey from his young days in Jackson 5 to his solo career.

Lead Performance and Casting

The film stars Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson in the lead role. Early reactions suggest that his acting performance will likely be the one of the strongest highlights of the film as he seems to mirror Jackson’s exact presence and mannerism in the movie.

Jaafar Jackson is the son of Jermaine Jackson, Michael Jackson’s brother and is set to deliver a performance which is both historically as well as technically accurate.

Concerns Over ‘Sanitised’ Narrative

Despite much excitement and anticipation regarding the film’s release, critics are weary of the film with early reviews of the film suggesting that the movie refuses to address the sexual scandals of Michael Jackson, a much controversial part of his personal life.

Publications such as The Hollywood Reporter indicate that the film may appeal to fans of his music as they did a good job in showcasing his live performances, while The Telegraph makes a bold statement that it appears to ‘avoid the elephant in the room’.

Omission of Controversial Allegations

One of the central criticisms revolves around the reported absence of references to allegations involving child sexual abuse and pedophilia in general. The film reportedly included material related to accusations made by Jordan Chandler, who was 13 at the time .

However, these materials were later removed prior to the release of the film due to a non disclosure agreement. Lawyers representing Jackson’s estate allegedly found a clause that could prevent the filmmakers from showcasing Jordan Chandler or any material related to him in the film .

As a result, the film was reshot and the storyline was altered. The film now concludes in the late 1980s, way before the allegations appeared.

Despite criticism of its narrative, the film’s musical sequences are expected to be a major and strong highlight with critics arguing that the exact recreation of the musical elements of the film will be a very engaging audio- visual experience for the viewers.
