Mona Singh Opens Up on Playing Aamir Khan’s Mother: ‘I Never Thought He Was 15 Years Older

In an recent interview, Mona reflected on her career choices, her fearless approach to acting, and why labels like “typecasting” never bothered her.

Taking the First Big Risk with Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin


Recalling her television debut, Mona admitted that playing Jassi was a bold move at a time when lead actresses were expected to look conventionally beautiful. She said,

“Yes, it was a risk I was taking because everybody wants to look pretty and their best when they debut. But for me, I just knew one thing ki mujhe to kaam karna hai.”


She added that the show’s concept excited her because it broke away from the usual tropes.
“Most of the shows at that time were about kitchen politics. And this was one show which was getting into office… where this lady Jassi, who doesn’t have any sense of fashion.”

Reinventing Herself After Jassi

After the show ended, Mona deliberately stayed away from daily soaps.

“For me, my journey to find myself again started after Jassi… I didn’t want to get into another daily soap right after Jassi because I knew that everybody would compare.”


Instead, she explored hosting, dance reality shows, and diverse roles. Even playing a mother in her late twenties did not deter her.

“I played a mother at a very early age… I was like theek hai kar lenge, we’ll see. But it worked.”

Playing Aamir Khan ’s Mother Without Hesitation

Talking about Laal Singh Chaddha , Mona said age never factored into her decision.

“Not once I thought that he is 15 years older, and I am playing his mother. Nahi.”


What convinced her was the emotional depth of the role.

“I looked at my graph, the character, and the gravitas she brings to the screen. I loved it… aging from 20 to 60 and it was a big challenge and I loved it.”

With her evolving body of work, Mona Singh continues to prove that trusting instinct and embracing risks can lead to lasting success.
