In a candid new interview with Variety, the Bollywood-born global star discussed the persistent chatter surrounding her eight-year marriage to American singer-actor Nick Jonas, calling curiosity about their relationship “water off a duck’s back” and emphasising that she no longer pays it any mind.

Married in December 2018 in Rajasthan in both Christian and Hindu ceremonies, Chopra and Jonas’s union instantly drew global attention - fueled by factors like their intercultural backgrounds, a 10-year age gap and the whirlwind timeline of their romance.

“We’re eight years in,” Chopra said when asked about rumours suggesting their relationship might falter. “If people want to keep waiting for it to implode, that’s their choice. I stopped thinking about it.”

She admitted that early on, the volume of public commentary - from age-gap jokes to questions about how serious their bond was - once felt painful. But over time, she and Jonas chose to turn inward, focusing on each other rather than outside noise. “I don’t know what it was about us that rubbed people the wrong way,” she explained, pointing to their different cultures, religions and backgrounds as part of the initial reaction.

Chopra also reflected on how fast their love story unfolded - meeting and marrying within six months - and admitted that she too had her doubts at first. But she praised Jonas’s authenticity and sincerity, qualities she said continue to inspire her.

The couple, who welcomed their daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas in January 2022, continue to maintain a strong personal and professional partnership. Chopra has several high-profile projects lined up, including roles in the Telugu film Varanasi, Citadel Season 2, The Bluff alongside Karl Urban and the action thriller Heads of State.
