A Grand Cinematic Tribute To Maratha Legend: Inside The Raja Shivaji Movie
Raja Shivaji Movie : The legend of one of the most fearless rulers, Chhatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj is not just any other story. It is a story of a hero. A pulse that beats through the heart of Maharashtra and the entire Indian subcontinent. When the story of a high budget movie titled Raja Shivaji was in the works, it sent buzz throughout the hearts of history buffs and cinephiles alike. It is directed and acted by the multi talented Riteish Deshmukh and attempts to be more that just some movie and instead tries to capture the essence of Shivaji Maharaj for a global audience.
The Marathi film industry has produced multiple movies on Chhatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj in recent years and even some on his son Sambhaji. However, this film is not just like any of the previous films about Shivaji Maharaj and it distinguishes itself from others through its sheer scale and personal investment of its creators.
The film does not just tell his story but instead dives deep into the brains of an administrative genius and one of the most courageous leaders who put up a strong opposition to the Mughals and Adilshahi empires with limited resources.
It is a high budget film and its budget is most reflective in its visual grandeur. The rugged Sahyadri mountains also called the ‘fortress of Marathas’ is depicted in its poetic yet gritty realism. The film uses the great compositions of the legendary composer duo Ajay- Atul and the world renowned cinematographer Santosh Sivan. Sivan’s lens brings a new perspective to the guerilla warfare tactics that Shivaji Maharaj pioneered. The Ajay-Atul duo also helps capture the thunderous sounds of the Tutari and the emotional weight of a burdening nation. Also, great care has been given to recreate the 17th century forts like Raigad and Pratapgad which they create while moving away from CGI which is seen in many films of today’s time and instead focuses on authenticity and weathered textures.
While most films focus on the ‘swarajya’ wars solely, this film aims to delve into the formative years of Shivaji. It highlights the profound impact of Rajmata Jijau whose wise teachings of dharma, justice and courage shaped the young boy into the emperor he is remembered as.
The budget is approximately rupees 100 crores. It has a star cast with Riteish playing Shivaji’s character, Sanjay Dutt as Afzal Khan and Abhishekh Bachchan as Sambhaji, Shivaji’s son. It also shows Vidya Balan as Badi Begum.
Netizens overall have praised the film especially the first half for impactful character introductions and a powerful entry for Shivaji. The internet also loved Salman Khan’s cameo. Fans on X tweeted:
