Now, designer and socialite Bina Ramani, a close friend of Rekha, has revisited that chapter, offering insight into why the actress chose to marry industrialist Mukesh Aggarwal despite being in love with Amitabh Bachchan.

Bina Ramani reflected on Rekha’s emotional world and the personal experiences that shaped her decisions. She suggested that Amitabh Bachchan’s public life and political ambitions became a decisive barrier, preventing him from ever acknowledging their relationship openly.

Rekha’s Childhood and Emotional Vulnerability

Bina spoke candidly about Rekha’s early life, explaining how her childhood deeply influenced her relationships. Born out of wedlock to actor Gemini Ganesan, Rekha grew up longing for emotional security and affection.

“Rekha was a very good friend. She was childlike. She is pure. If she has made silly moves in her life, those were out of innocence. She was trapped by her childhood. Between the role of a mother and a father, she must have craved and couldn’t get enough of love. And then at a very young age 13–14, she started working. She didn’t really enjoy the childhood,” Bina said.

According to her, Rekha entered the film industry too young and missed out on a carefree upbringing, which made her emotionally vulnerable later in life.

Her Deep Bond With Amitabh Bachchan

Talking about Rekha’s feelings for Amitabh Bachchan, Bina revealed how deeply the actress was invested in the relationship.

“When I met her whole, her whole life was in encased in Amitabh Bachchan,” she recalled.

When asked whether Rekha was truly in love with the superstar, Bina replied, “Yes, she believed belonged to him in spirit. And she believed that he belong to her in spirit. They had a communication. These things can happen.”

Despite this emotional connection, Amitabh Bachchan was married to Jaya Bachchan and was also stepping into politics, which made public acknowledgment impossible.

Why Rekha Married Mukesh Aggarwal

Bina Ramani explained that Rekha’s marriage to Mukesh Aggarwal was not impulsive but driven by emotional exhaustion and the need for stability.

“I introduced her to Mukesh,” Bina said, adding, “Amitabh had joined politics, and she had come to visit me in New York. She was going through hard time because Amitabh had now become a public person, and he may have probably said to her that there was no chance of him ever… their alliance must have had to drift…publicly no more. She was keen to marry someone good and important.”

She also revealed that there were discussions about Rekha marrying her brother Gulu Lalvani, a British businessman known at the time for his flamboyant lifestyle, but the match did not work out.

“There was talk about her marrying my brother Gulu, who had a playboy reputation at that time, and he lived life very big. It didn’t fit and she continued staying with me in New York,” Bina shared.

A Marriage That Ended in Tragedy

Rekha married Delhi-based industrialist Mukesh Aggarwal in March 1990. Tragically, the marriage lasted only about seven months. Mukesh Aggarwal died by suicide later that year, marking one of the most painful chapters in Rekha’s life.

Even decades later, the Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan relationship remains one of Bollywood’s most talked-about stories, a tale of love, restraint, and choices shaped by circumstance rather than desire.
