Strong Tremors Felt in Kolkata as 5.6 Quake Hits Bangladesh; NCS Reports Multiple Quakes in Region

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake in Bangladesh struck 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi on Friday, triggering noticeable tremors across several districts of West Bengal. Many residents in Kolkata, Malda, Coochbehar, Nadia, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Siliguri felt the ground shake and rushed out of homes and buildings in fear. Because of the quake’s shallow depth, the West Bengal tremors today were brief but widely felt.

According to the GFZ, the Bangladesh earthquake 5.6 magnitude occurred at 04:38 UTC at a depth of just 10 km. Shallow earthquakes often travel farther and feel stronger, which explains the widespread shaking across neighbouring regions. Even though no immediate damage or injuries have been reported, officials remain alert. Residents described the jolt as “strong and sudden,” highlighting how the Narsingdi quake shallow depth caught many off guard during routine evening activities.

This event follows two moderate-intensity quakes recorded earlier on Friday in Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). These new tremors add to a series of ongoing seismic activities across the region, forming part of the latest Pakistan Afghanistan earthquake updates.

The first tremor, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake, struck Afghanistan at 1:59 am IST, located at 36.45°N, 70.45°E at a depth of 190 km. The NCS noted on X:
"EQ of M: 4.2, On: 21/11/2025 01:59:13 IST, Lat: 36.45 N, Long: 70.45 E, Depth: 190 Km, Location: Afghanistan."
Because it struck deep underground, this NCS earthquake report 2025 was felt less widely.

Shortly after, at 3:09 am IST, Pakistan witnessed a stronger magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Its epicentre was located at 36.12°N, 71.51°E at a depth of 135 km. The NCS posted:
"EQ of M: 5.2, On: 21/11/2025 03:09:12 IST, Lat: 36.12 N, Long: 71.51 E, Depth: 135 Km, Location: Pakistan."
This tremor adds to the list of seismic activity in 2025, forming part of the broader Pakistan earthquake history 2025.

Additionally, the NCS recorded a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in the Indian Ocean at 2:41 am IST, located at a depth of 10 km. The agency posted:
"EQ of M: 4.3, On: 21/11/2025 02:41:20 IST, Lat: 3.00 N, Long: 95.58 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Indian Ocean."
This again underscores the ongoing seismic activity Indian Ocean region 2025.

The Pakistan-Afghanistan zone, situated at the collision point of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, has witnessed repeated seismic pressure releases. This geological setting explains the rising number of moderate earthquakes in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In November 2025, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan killed at least seven people and injured around 150. These events are among several tragic incidents forming the Afghanistan earthquake timeline 2025.

Earlier, in August 2025, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on August 31, followed by aftershocks that killed more than 2,000 people and injured thousands. This continues to be one of the deadliest events in the Afghanistan earthquake history.

Pakistan has also experienced frequent quakes this year. In June 2025, a 5.5 magnitude quake struck central Pakistan. This was followed by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on May 10 and a magnitude 5 quake on April 12, highlighting the consistent seismic unrest recorded in the Pakistan earthquake updates 2025 .
