AAP Removes Raghav Chadha As Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader, Ashok Mittal Replaces Him

The Aam Aadmi Party has written to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat seeking the removal of Raghav Chadha from the post of Deputy Leader in the Upper House. In the same communication, the party has requested that Chadha should not be allotted speaking time from AAP’s quota in the Rajya Sabha. The party has also proposed Ashok Mittal as the new Deputy Leader. The move comes days after Chadha was dropped from AAP’s list of star campaigners for the upcoming Assembly elections.

AAP Writes To Rajya Sabha Secretariat

The Aam Aadmi Party has formally communicated to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat that Raghav Chadha should be removed from the post of Deputy Leader of the party in the Upper House.

The party has also requested that he should not be allotted speaking time from AAP’s quota in the Rajya Sabha.


In the same letter, AAP has proposed Ashok Mittal as the new Deputy Leader in the Upper House and has asked the Secretariat to complete the appointment process.

AAP currently has 10 members in the Rajya Sabha, including seven from Punjab and three from Delhi.

Raghav Chadha’s Political Background

Raghav Chadha has been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party since its inception. He began his political journey working with Arvind Kejriwal during the Delhi Lokpal Bill movement in 2012.

He later became one of the party’s national spokespersons and was appointed its youngest treasurer after AAP’s victory in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Chadha contested from South Delhi and lost to Ramesh Bidhuri.

He later won the Rajendra Nagar seat in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections and served as vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board.


In 2022, Chadha entered the Rajya Sabha at the age of 33.

Recent Party Move And Earlier Stand

The latest move comes after AAP recently dropped Chadha from its list of star campaigners for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Earlier, Chadha had spoken in favour of making paternity leave a legal right in India. He had said that caregiving should be a shared responsibility between both parents and that laws should reflect the realities of modern parenting.
