The Battle for the Brahmaputra: Himanta Biswa Sarma vs. Gaurav Gogoi
Assam’s political landscape has become a high stakes battleground between Himanta Biswa Sarma from Bharatiya Janata Party and Gaurav Gogoi from Indian National Congress (INC). This contest is vital as on one side INC is trying to reclaim the stronghold it once had in Assam while they would be facing off BJP’s ‘ new Assam model ’ which is built on new infrastructure and aggressive cultural identity.
Himanta Biswa Sarma was a key strategist for INC who defected to BJP way back in 2015, adding another layer of drama to this high stakes battle. He now carries the weight of incumbency and a reputation for administrative ruthlessness. Conversely, Gaurav Gogoi, the son of the late three time CM Tarun Gogoi has emerged as a formidable challenge after his 2024 victory in Jorhat which positioned him as both the moral and political alternative to Himata’s style.
The rivalry is also deeply personal with Gaurav’s family legacy on the line while Himanta’s current governance and his ‘new Assam’ plan on the line. Historically, BJP has dominated the Upper Assam and urban pockets but recently Congress has shown a resurgence, particularly, among the tea tribe and indigenous communities of Assam.
Current campaign strategies highlight a sharp divide in messaging. The BJP’s machinery is led by Himanta’s relentless touring and focusing on matters like security while painting Gaurav as a product of nepotism. Gaurav on the other hand has painted himself as a people’s advocate and is addressing the local matters like unemployment.
There have been a total of 126 seats with a majority mark of 64 seats. The elections were conducted in a single phase polling and the voting took place on April 9, 2026 and the results will be declared on May 4, 2026. There are 2.49 Crore registered voters with 85-86% voter turnout.
BJP has been winning the state elections in Assam since 2016. In the last assembly elections in 2021 ,they won 60 seats on their own and with the NDA alliance winning a grand total of 75 seats. INC only managed to win 26 seats in the same contest.
