Bharat Taxi: India’s First Co-operative Taxi Service Set to Rival Ola & Uber - Check How
India is gearing up for a game-changing addition to its ride-hailing landscape. Bharat Taxi , the country’s first cooperative taxi service , is poised to challenge established players like Ola and Uber with a driver-owned, citizen-focused approach. Backed by the government, this platform promises transparency, fairness, and a unique cooperative model.
Government-Backed Initiative to Transform Ride-Hailing
In a move aimed at reshaping urban mobility, the Indian government has partnered with Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited to launch Bharat Taxi. The service will officially roll out in December, with a pilot project set to begin in Delhi this November, featuring 650 drivers. Following the pilot, Bharat Taxi plans to expand across multiple states.
“The initiative seeks to transform the mobility ecosystem through a cooperative-driven, transparent, and citizen-first ride-hailing platform,” stated the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).
Cooperative Model: Drivers as Stakeholders
Unlike traditional private ride-hailing services, Bharat Taxi operates as a cooperative. This means drivers are not just service providers - they are co-owners. By making drivers stakeholders, the platform fosters a sense of community, shared responsibility, and equitable benefit-sharing between drivers and passengers.
The platform will be operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, with a governing council overseeing its operations. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of AMUL (GCMMF), has been elected Chairman, while Rohit Gupta, Deputy Managing Director of NCDC, will serve as Vice Chairman.
Integration with National Digital Platforms
Bharat Taxi aims to offer a seamless digital experience. The platform will be linked with DigiLocker, UMANG, and API Setu, enabling smooth identity verification and streamlined service delivery for users across India.
How to Use Bharat Taxi
