BJP Accuses Arvind Kejriwal of Getting 7-Star Two-Acre Government Bungalow in Chandigarh

The political battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has intensified yet again, with the BJP launching a fresh offensive against AAP chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal . The latest controversy revolves around allegations that Kejriwal has been allotted a two-acre government bungalow in Chandigarh’s Sector 2 by the Punjab government for his personal use. The accusation has reignited debates about political privilege, transparency, and the contrast between leaders’ public image and personal lifestyle.

BJP’s Allegation: “Super CM” of Punjab

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Delhi BJP accused Arvind Kejriwal of living a life of luxury while claiming to represent the “common man.” The post alleged that Kejriwal has been allotted a “luxurious 7-star government bungalow” in Chandigarh’s Sector 2, reportedly from the Punjab Chief Minister’s quota. The BJP even shared satellite images of the alleged residence, describing it as extravagant and beyond the norms of public office.

The party further mocked Kejriwal, calling him Punjab’s “Super CM”, suggesting that he was exercising influence in the state beyond his official capacity. The BJP’s post read: "After vacating the Sheeshmahal in Delhi, Punjab’s 'Super CM' Arvind Kejriwal has now had an even more magnificent Sheeshmahal prepared in Punjab. In Chandigarh’s Sector 2, Arvind Kejriwal has been allotted a luxurious 7-star government bungalow spread over 2 acres from the chief minister’s quota."

The phrasing directly ties this controversy to earlier accusations against Kejriwal over his official Delhi residence, which the BJP had labeled the “Sheeshmahal”, referring to its allegedly opulent renovation costs.

The “Sheeshmahal” Controversy Reignites

This is not the first time Arvind Kejriwal’s accommodations have drawn criticism. Earlier this year, the BJP targeted him over renovations at his official residence at 6 Flagstaff Road in Delhi. The opposition alleged that crores of rupees of taxpayer money were spent on extravagant interiors, including a gym, sauna room, and luxury fittings.

The Delhi BJP unit even released a video showcasing these interiors, accusing Kejriwal of hypocrisy for portraying himself as an ordinary citizen while residing in what they called a “seven-star resort-like residence.” BJP’s Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva went further, accusing Kejriwal of “hiding the seven-star resort-like residence” from the public.

Kejriwal, who served nearly a decade as Delhi’s Chief Minister, has consistently faced scrutiny over the perceived gap between his political image as a champion of the “aam aadmi” (common man) and the lavishness of his living arrangements.

AAP MP Joins in the Criticism

Adding to the controversy, AAP’s own Rajya Sabha MP, Swati Maliwal, also shared the image of the alleged Chandigarh bungalow on social media. Her post noted that, apart from the bungalow, Kejriwal “also used a government aircraft for travel.” Her remarks further fueled public debate and drew attention to internal discontent within AAP ranks.

AAP’s Response: “A Diversion Tactic”

The Aam Aadmi Party has dismissed the BJP’s claims as politically motivated and an attempt to divert public attention from other pressing issues. Party representatives asserted that the BJP is “trying to distract citizens from Delhi’s deteriorating law and order situation” by repeatedly reviving the issue of Kejriwal’s residence.

According to AAP leaders, Kejriwal’s accommodation has been managed in accordance with official rules, and the focus should instead be on improving governance rather than indulging in personal attacks.

Kejriwal’s Move After Resignation

Following his resignation from the post of Delhi Chief Minister earlier this year, Arvind Kejriwal vacated the Flagstaff Road bungalow. He subsequently moved into his MP accommodation on Ferozeshah Road in Lutyens’ Delhi. Reports indicate that his successor, Atishi, considered shifting to the Flagstaff Road residence but refrained from doing so after the Public Works Department (PWD) stated that an inventory of the property was still pending.

This sequence of events has added to the confusion and speculation surrounding the exact nature of Kejriwal’s current residence and the alleged allotment in Chandigarh.

Broader Political Implications

The controversy has broader political implications, as it highlights the increasing tension between the BJP and AAP, particularly in the context of Punjab and Delhi politics. The BJP’s labeling of Kejriwal as “Punjab’s Super CM” reflects its strategy of framing him as a power figure operating behind the scenes in Punjab, where AAP currently governs.

Moreover, the incident underscores a recurring pattern in Indian politics — the clash between populist rhetoric and perceived elitism. Kejriwal’s “common man” image has been a cornerstone of his political identity, and such allegations, if proven true, could potentially erode public trust.
