BJP Set for Historic First Win in West Bengal, NDA Expands Footprint Across India
With the BJP on course to register a historic first-ever win in the West Bengal election by unseating the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the party and its NDA allies are now set to be in power in 22 state Assemblies, up from 21 at the end of 2025.
Counting is still underway across four states and one Union Territory, but the broader political picture is already becoming clear. The BJP looks set to retain power in Assam, while its ally AINRC appears to be holding on in Puducherry.
While the BJP has made major gains in the West Bengal election, the party has found the southern battleground more challenging.
The NDA has struggled to make meaningful inroads in Kerala. At the same time, it appears likely to emerge as the principal Opposition in Tamil Nadu, which remains a notable development in the broader political landscape.
On the Opposition front, INDIA bloc parties are now set to remain in power in six states: Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Telangana, Karnataka, and now Kerala.
In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) looks poised to return to power after a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule. This Kerala election outcome is especially significant because Kerala had been the last remaining Left stronghold in the country.
Among other Opposition parties, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will now begin preparing to defend its stronghold in Punjab in 2027, while the Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM) continues to hold Mizoram.
In Tamil Nadu, poll debutant Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is on course to displace INDIA bloc member DMK. However, it remains unclear whether Vijay’s party will cross the majority mark on its own or require outside support to form the government.
The DMK had been one of the most important allies of the INDIA bloc, both in Tamil Nadu and in Parliament.
The party had consistently raised national issues to challenge the BJP, including language imposition and delimitation. But its expected defeat in Tamil Nadu has changed the political equation. The party is not only trailing in the state but has also slipped behind the AIADMK in seat tally.
This impending loss in Tamil Nadu reduces the INDIA bloc’s hold by one state.
Even as the INDIA bloc appears to be losing Tamil Nadu, the Congress-led UDF’s expected return to power in Kerala has helped offset that setback.
The Kerala result has effectively balanced the loss of Tamil Nadu, allowing the Opposition alliance to maintain its broader presence in state politics.
Taken together, the latest election results suggest that an Opposition party is now set to be in power in 9 states and Union Territories across India.
While the BJP’s likely breakthrough in the West Bengal election marks one of the biggest political stories of the moment, the overall electoral map still reflects a competitive balance between the NDA and Opposition forces across the country.
