In a major upgrade to India’s electronic toll collection system, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced the launch of an Annual FASTag Pass starting August 15, 2025. This move aims to offer seamless travel on national highways by minimizing congestion and simplifying toll payments for non-commercial private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans.

The new FASTag Annual Pass will be priced at Rs 3,000 and will grant either one year of validity or 200 toll-free trips , whichever limit is reached first. The facility is designed specifically for frequent commuters, helping them reduce the overall toll cost while also ensuring a smoother driving experience.

Where and How to Buy

The pass will be available on the Rajmarg Yatra mobile application and through the official websites of both the NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Users are advised to avoid purchasing it through third-party platforms to steer clear of fraud.

To activate the pass, vehicle owners must ensure that:
  • Their FASTag is active and installed.
  • The Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) is valid and properly linked to the FASTag.
  • The vehicle is not commercial, not under dispute, and not blacklisted.

Steps for Online Activation

  1. Visit the Rajmarg Yatra app or NHAI/MoRTH official website.
  2. Enter your vehicle registration number and FASTag ID.
  3. Make a one-time payment of Rs 3,000.
  4. Once payment is processed, the pass gets activated.
  5. A confirmation SMS will be sent to the mobile number linked to the FASTag.

Scope and Limitations

This annual pass will only be valid on NHAI-operated toll plazas across the country. It won’t apply to:
  • State highways
  • Private toll roads
  • State-run expressways
Additionally, the annual pass is non-transferable and is tied to one specific vehicle only.

Who Will Benefit?

The initiative targets regular highway users, such as those who drive long distances frequently. It can potentially save drivers between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 per year, especially for those making 50 or more trips annually.

The type of toll plaza impacts how trips are counted:
  • In open toll systems, each toll point crossing counts as one trip.
  • In closed toll systems, a full journey from entry to exit counts as one trip.

Official Statement

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized that the Annual Pass is designed to improve travel efficiency:

“By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimizing disputes at toll plazas, the Annual Pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners.”

Voluntary Scheme

It’s important to note that this annual pass is optional. Those who don’t travel frequently on highways can continue with the regular pay-as-you-go FASTag model.
