Former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy Passes Away: Two-Day State Mourning Declared, Tributes Pour In For Congress Stalwart

The Kerala government has declared a two-day state mourning following the demise of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who passed away this morning in Bengaluru after a prolonged illness. The news of his demise was conveyed by his son, Chandy Oommen , through a Facebook post stating, "Appa has passed away."

Earlier this year, the 79-year-old leader was transferred to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram due to pneumonia . Subsequently, he was moved to Bengaluru for additional medical treatment. Political leaders from various parties paid their respects to the Congress stalwart and acknowledged his significant contributions as the Chief Minister of the state.

Oommen Chandy had the honour of serving as the Chief Minister of Kerala on two separate occasions. Notably, he held the record for being the longest-serving MLA in Kerala.


"We were elected to the Legislative Assembly in the same year. It was at the same stage that we came to the political fore through student life. We led public life at the same time and it is extremely difficult to bid him farewell. Oommen Chandy was a capable administrator and a person who was closely involved in people's lives," expressed Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan .

Congress Remembers 'Visionary Leader'


Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took to Twitter and expressed, "My humble tribute to the stalwart Oommen Chandy, former Kerala Chief Minister and a staunch Congress man who stood tall as a leader of the masses. His unwavering commitment and visionary leadership left an indelible mark on Kerala's progress and the nation's political landscape. He will be remembered for his dedication and service to the people. Heartfelt condolences to the family and supporters."

Kerala Congress expressed their deep sorrow through a tweet, stating, "Extremely sad to bid farewell to our most beloved leader and former CM Shri. Oommen Chandy. One of the most popular and dynamic leaders of Kerala, Chandy sir was loved across generations and sections of the population. The Congress family will miss his leadership and energy."

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her condolences, stating, "Deepest condolences to the family of Shri. Oommen Chandy. He was a pillar of the Congress party, a leader who dedicated his life to service and was deeply committed to the values we are fighting for today. We will all remember him with great respect and miss his wise counsel."

Leaders Pay Tribute


Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi conveyed her sorrow, saying, "Saddened to hear about the passing of Sh. Oomen Chandy, former CM of Kerala. Heartfelt condolences to his family and his colleagues. May his soul rest in peace."

NK Premachandran, a Member of Parliament from the Revolutionary Socialist Party, expressed his condolences on the passing of senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy. Describing the demise as a significant loss, he stated, "...The basic concept of Oommen Chandy in his public activities & political activities is to help the poor and marginalised sections of society. He was always with the people, for the people and among the people...As the CM of Kerala, he did innovative works in the field of development...It is a big loss - not only for Kerala or Congress but entire humanity..."
