Behind the headlines of this communal tension and administrative action is one name: Mohammad Sabir. The violence erupted after a collision between two bikes on Saturday. Sabir was riding one of the bikes with his wife. The other side then set his shop on fire. Sabir escaped and saved his life.
Mohammad Sabir, a migrant from Bihar, came to Ahmedabad a year and a half ago seeking employment. A mob armed with petrol set his tire shop on fire, completely razing it to the ground.
Sabir is the sole breadwinner of his family, which includes his wife, three young children, and an elderly mother. For him, the shop was not just a business, but a lifeline.
I have nothing left – Sabir
Standing outside the burnt shutter of his shop, Sabir wept bitterly, saying, "I came from Bihar to earn an honest living. I've lost all my savings. I don't even have enough money to feed my children. I feel like committing suicide because I don't know how they will survive."
The violence that erupted after the death of local youth Dharmesh Gamara reached his home. Recalling the moment, Sabir said, "A mob gathered with bottles of petrol. I had to run for my life. We are ordinary people, we don't want riots or violence. We just live for our families. I request the government to please help me."
As the situation in the city returns to normal, the Gujarat Police and the district administration have intensified their legal action. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to expedite the investigation into the murder and subsequent arson.
Senior police officials have also met with the family of the deceased, Dharmesh Gamara, who expressed satisfaction with the ongoing investigation.
