The monsoon has tightened its grip across the country, leaving several states battling floods, landslides, and roadblocks. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rainfall is expected in Jammu division on August 29 and 30, while many parts of North and South India continue to struggle with rain-related chaos.
In Jammu, relentless rain has triggered multiple landslides, with a major tragedy reported on the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route, where at least 34 lives were lost. Himachal Pradesh too remains severely affected, with over 500 roads, including key highways, blocked due to landslides. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported disruptions in power and water supply, leaving thousands struggling. Rescue teams, supported by helicopters in Chamba, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti, are working round the clock to evacuate stranded pilgrims and residents.

Punjab Grapples With Flooded Villages and Rising Rivers
Punjab continues to remain on edge as the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers swell, causing widespread flooding in villages and farmlands. Over 6,600 people have already been rescued, with authorities deploying boats, ATOR vehicles, and drones to provide food, medicines, and water in the worst-hit areas like Amritsar’s Ramdas and Gurdaspur’s Dera Baba Nanak.
UP Rivers Near Danger Mark, Thousands Affected
In Uttar Pradesh, the Ganga and Yamuna rivers came dangerously close to breaching the danger level, submerging more than 76 roads and several streets. With over 1.5 lakh people displaced, relief camps have been set up to house the affected. The iconic Ganga Aarti at Dashaswamedh Ghat in Varanasi is now being performed on rooftops, while ghats like Manikarnika remain submerged.
Telangana Breaks 50-Year Rainfall Record
The southern state of Telangana has also been battered by unrelenting rainfall. Kamareddy and Medak districts witnessed record-breaking showers, the heaviest in 50 years. The downpour left National Highway 44 severely damaged, collapsing at three different stretches and disrupting travel.
Continuous Showers in Rajasthan
In Rajasthan, several districts including Udaipur, Ajmer, Jaipur, and Bharatpur witnessed moderate rainfall on Thursday. The showers have brought some relief from the heat but also led to waterlogging and transport disruptions in many regions.
Monsoon to Stay Active
With the IMD predicting continued rainfall in multiple states, authorities are on high alert. Rescue and relief operations are in full swing as both northern and southern states deal with the aftermath of floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage. Residents have been urged to remain cautious and follow weather advisories closely.
