How to Port Your Mobile Number: A Complete Guide to the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Process

What is Mobile Number Portability (MNP)?

Mobile Number Portability is a service regulated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that allows mobile subscribers to switch from one service provider to another without changing their existing mobile number. It applies to both prepaid and postpaid connections.

Eligibility Criteria for MNP

  • Your mobile number should be active and not barred by the current operator.
  • The number must have been active for at least 90 days with the current operator (for prepaid connections). Postpaid customers can port any time.

  • The number should not be under any contract or locked by the current operator.

Step-by-Step Guide to Port Your Mobile Number

Step 1: Generate Unique Porting Code (UPC)

Send an SMS with the word PORT followed by your 10-digit mobile number to 1900. For example, send PORT 98XXXXXX00 to 1900.

Within a few minutes, you will receive a Unique Porting Code (UPC) via SMS. This code is valid for 15 days from the date of issue.

Step 2: Visit the New Service Provider

Go to the store or website of the telecom operator you want to switch to. Inform them you want to port your number and provide the UPC.


Step 3: Submit Documents and Fill Porting Form

Submit a copy of your identity proof (Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, etc.) and address proof as required. Fill the Customer Application Form (CAF) provided by the new operator.

Step 4: New SIM Activation

The new operator will provide you with a new SIM card. Your number will be ported, and the new SIM will be activated within 7 working days.

Step 5: Porting Process Completion

You will receive confirmation SMS from both your old and new operators about the successful porting. During the porting period, your old SIM will continue to work until the port is completed.

Charges and Waiting Period

  • There is usually no charge for porting your mobile number. However, some operators may charge a nominal fee.

  • The porting process typically completes within 7 days for most states.


  • In some telecom circles, the porting may take up to 3 days or more.

  • If you want to cancel your porting request, you can do so by sending CANCEL to 1900 within the UPC validity period.
