Under the revised system, the charting process will now be carried out manually to ensure accuracy and to prevent complications linked to quota allocations — especially for Head Office (HO) quotas. The changes are expected to make the ticketing and chart preparation process smoother, more transparent, and more passenger-friendly.

Why the Change Was Needed

According to railway officials, the previous charting system — which relied heavily on automated quota management — occasionally caused discrepancies in ticket allocations and waiting list clearances. In response, the Railways decided to restore manual oversight in chart preparation to ensure fairness and eliminate last-minute confusion.


Discussions and reviews regarding the new process were held until late Saturday evening at the Commercial Department office, ensuring that all technical and operational aspects were carefully examined before implementation.

New Charting Rules for Trains Departing Between 5 AM and 2 PM

Under the new guidelines, the first reservation chart for all trains scheduled to depart between 5 AM and 2 PM will now be prepared the previous night, starting at 9 PM.


This change allows passengers to check their ticket status well in advance of their journey. Whether a ticket has been confirmed, waitlisted, or upgraded will be reflected clearly on the first chart.

Passengers can plan their journey or make alternate arrangements the night before their train departs — eliminating uncertainty and last-minute rushes to check confirmation status.

New Rules for Trains Departing After 2 PM

For trains departing after 2 PM, the first reservation chart will now be prepared exactly eight hours before the scheduled departure time.

This applies to all trains operating between 2 PM and 5 AM the following morning, ensuring a uniform and timely system for chart preparation across all routes.


Example:
If a train departs at 10 PM, its reservation chart will be ready by 2 PM the same day. This gives passengers ample notice to check ticket status and make travel decisions accordingly.

A Major Relief for Waitlisted Passengers

Perhaps the most significant impact of this new rule is on waitlisted passengers. Under the previous system, many passengers learned of their ticket confirmation only at the last moment — sometimes minutes before departure.

Now, with charts being prepared earlier, those on the waiting list will be notified of their ticket status well in advance. If their tickets remain unconfirmed, they’ll have enough time to explore alternative travel arrangements, such as booking another train or choosing a different mode of transport.

This reform is particularly beneficial for long-distance travellers and those living in remote areas, who often face logistical challenges when making last-minute changes.

According to Senior Ticket Inspector Phool Kumar Sharma, detailed instructions have already been issued to all relevant departments, and the new charting system will be fully operational from July 8.


He stated that the Indian Railways’ primary goal behind this change is to make the ticketing and reservation process more transparent and passenger-centric. By ensuring that reservation charts are prepared in advance, the system aims to reduce confusion and enhance passenger satisfaction.

“The new guidelines are meant to simplify the process and ensure that passengers have sufficient time to know their ticket status. This will also help railway staff manage ticketing and waiting lists more effectively,” Sharma explained.
