Indian Railways Plans To Double Originating Train Capacity In 48 Cities By 2030
Indian Railways has unveiled an ambitious plan to double the originating train capacity of 48 major cities by the year 2030, responding to sustained growth in passenger demand across both suburban and long-distance routes. The move aims to ease congestion at busy terminals, improve operational efficiency and ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with rising travel needs. According to officials, capacity augmentation will begin immediately, with phased benefits visible over the next five years rather than waiting until the end of the decade.
The plan covers both suburban and non-suburban traffic, recognising that each segment has distinct operational requirements. By addressing terminal and sectional bottlenecks together, Indian Railways aims to create a more resilient and scalable network.
Another major focus will be the identification and development of new terminals in and around urban areas. This decentralised approach is expected to reduce pressure on overcrowded main stations while distributing traffic more evenly across city rail networks.
Maintenance capacity will also be strengthened through the development of mega coaching complexes, ensuring that increased train operations do not compromise safety or reliability. Additionally, sectional capacity will be enhanced through signalling upgrades, traffic facility works and multi-tracking at critical stretches.
