Frequent train travellers have a reason to cheer. To tackle complaints about overpriced food, poor quality meals, and unauthorized vendors, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has begun rolling out its e-pantry service on mail and express trains.

Earlier, this facility was limited to a handful of premium trains. Now, the Railways is gradually introducing it on regular long-distance routes as well. The service has currently been launched on 25 trains, and based on passenger response and smooth operations, it will be extended to many more in the coming months.

What Is the IRCTC E-Pantry Service ?

The e-pantry is a digital, pre-booked food delivery system that is fully integrated with the IRCTC ticketing platform. It allows passengers to choose meals online either at the time of booking tickets or after ticket confirmation. Food is prepared and supplied only by authorized vendors, ensuring better hygiene, standard quality, and fixed pricing.

Along with meals, passengers can also order Rail Neer and other approved food items, reducing dependence on onboard vendors or platform sellers.

Pilot Project on Vivek Express

As part of its pilot phase, the e-pantry service has been introduced on the Vivek Express (22503/04), one of the longest-distance trains in India. Railway officials say that if the service performs well on this route, it will be rolled out across a much wider network.

Passengers holding confirmed, RAC, or partially confirmed tickets are all eligible to use this facility, making it accessible to a large number of travellers.

How to Book Food Through E-Pantry

Ordering food via the e-pantry system is simple and fully online:

  • Choose the e-pantry option while booking your ticket on the IRCTC website
  • Or place a food order later from the ‘Booked Ticket History’ section
  • Once confirmed, meals are delivered directly to your seat by authorized pantry staff during the journey

The digital system ensures transparency in pricing and delivery, significantly reducing the chances of payment disputes or service issues.

Major Benefits for Train Passengers

The expanded e-pantry service offers several advantages:

  • Timely and seat-based food delivery
  • Reasonable and pre-declared prices
  • Improved food quality and hygiene standards
  • Elimination of unauthorized vendors
  • Greater transparency and accountability through a digital process

Overall, the initiative aims to make train journeys safer, more comfortable, and stress-free especially on long routes.

What’s Ahead?

The Railways plans to expand the e-pantry service in a phased manner. If the initial rollout continues to receive positive feedback, this facility could soon become available on most long-distance mail and express trains across India. Once fully implemented, it is expected to significantly improve the onboard dining experience for millions of railway passengers every day.
