While the government has confirmed that there is no nationwide shortage, increased demand driven by panic buying and social media rumours has created temporary localised supply disruptions. Energy experts note that India’s LPG imports have been affected by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, reducing supply margins in the short term. Social media posts suggesting an imminent shortage led households to stockpile cylinders, causing sudden spikes in demand. Experts emphasise that the reported scarcity is largely a consequence of public behaviour rather than actual supply disruptions. Nevertheless, the government recognises the impact of these rumours and is actively coordinating with suppliers to maintain smooth distribution.

Potential Price Impact

Analysts caution that if the geopolitical situation persists, oil and gas prices could see upward pressure, potentially influencing domestic LPG cylinder rates. Industry sources indicate that a prolonged disruption in supply could gradually affect pricing, although immediate changes are unlikely. The Ministry of Petroleum and other authorities are working to mitigate such risks and ensure consistent access to domestic fuel for households across the country.

Government Measures to Maintain Supply

The central government has directed states and union territories to closely monitor LPG distribution and prevent hoarding or black marketing. Home Secretary Govind Mohan recently chaired an online meeting with chief secretaries, DGPs, and Consumer Affairs officials to address concerns raised by reports of shortages. Authorities have reassured the public that India’s domestic LPG supply, which accounts for around 87 per cent of annual consumption, remains secure.

Regional governments, including Delhi, have confirmed that supplies of LPG, petrol, diesel, and PNG are operating normally. Officials have appealed to citizens not to succumb to rumours, emphasising that there is no need for panic or unnecessary purchasing. Consumers can continue to access domestic LPG cylinders through established distribution channels without concern.
