Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan: 40 Lakh Women to Get ₹10,000 in This State
State governments across India are stepping up efforts to empower women through self-employment schemes, and Assam has now made a strong addition to this list. The state has rolled out a focused initiative aimed at encouraging women to start their own small businesses with direct financial support.
Assam is offering ₹10,000 in financial assistance to women entrepreneurs under a scheme called Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan (Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurs Campaign). Following Bihar’s lead, Assam has introduced this programme to strengthen female entrepreneurship, especially in rural areas. The amount is directly transferred to the bank accounts of women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and applications can be made on an ongoing basis.
The Assam government believes this scheme will boost rural employment, raise household incomes, and help women become financially independent. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has shared that over 1.5 million women have already benefited from the initiative. While the original target was 3.2 million women, it has now been increased to 4 million (40 lakh). Government data also suggests that nearly 8 lakh women have already achieved “Lakshapati” status through the programme.
Through this initiative, the Assam government aims to create around 40 lakh “Lakshapati Didis”, strengthening the rural economy and improving family incomes. More than just financial aid, the scheme is a step towards long-term self-reliance for women and a more resilient grassroots economy.
