Monsoon Update: Cold Wave Stays, Heavy Rainfall Forecast for These States
Weather conditions across India continue to remain dynamic, with parts of the north witnessing temporary relief from intense cold, even as fresh disturbances threaten to bring rain, fog and falling temperatures once again. From the plains of Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh to the hill states, changing wind patterns and approaching systems are expected to influence daily life over the coming days.
Brief relief from cold in North India
Over the past two days, northern states such as Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR have seen sunshine emerge after 10 am, helping daytime temperatures climb slightly. This has provided much-needed relief from the lingering cold wave, prompting many residents to step outdoors and enjoy warmer conditions during late mornings and afternoons.
Similar relief has been reported in parts of Kashmir, Rajasthan and nearby regions, where minimum and maximum temperatures have edged upward. However, meteorologists caution that this improvement may be short-lived, as a new Western Disturbance and active westerly winds are expected to impact large parts of North India soon.
According to weather experts, an approaching Western Disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from midweek onwards. The system could trigger rain in the plains and snowfall in higher reaches, potentially bringing back colder conditions and disrupting normal routines, especially in hill states and fog-prone regions.
Delhi-NCR weather forecast
In the national capital, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light cloud cover on Wednesday, along with fog in several areas during early morning hours. The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to remain around 24°C, while the minimum may range between 6°C and 8°C.
Over the next few days, Delhi could experience a mix of sunshine and occasional light rain. Winds may blow at speeds of 30–40 kmph, adding a slight chill to the air. Dense fog is also likely to blanket parts of the region during early mornings for the next three to four days, reducing visibility and affecting traffic movement.
Himachal Pradesh on cold wave alert
Cold wave conditions are set to persist in Himachal Pradesh, where the IMD has issued a yellow alert for severe cold in districts including Kangra, Mandi, Una, Bilaspur and Hamirpur. The weather in the state is expected to remain dry until Wednesday.
From Thursday to Saturday, another strong Western Disturbance is likely to bring a fresh spell of rain and snowfall across the state. Higher reaches may see snowfall, while lower areas could receive rain, increasing the risk of slippery roads and travel disruptions.
Changing weather in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is also expected to see a shift in weather patterns. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall in parts of western Uttar Pradesh between January 22 and 25. Eastern districts may receive light to moderate rain on January 23 and 24.
Dense fog is likely to prevail during night and early morning hours over the next two to three days. Reduced visibility may affect road, rail and air travel, prompting authorities to advise caution.
Rainfall in southern and coastal regions
Beyond the northern states, weather activity is expected in parts of southern India as well. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms and rain in several areas of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Light rainfall is also possible in isolated parts of Telangana and Mahe, where residents have been advised to stay alert.
Overall, while brief sunshine has offered temporary comfort from harsh winter conditions, changing weather systems suggest that rain, fog and cold will continue to influence conditions across many parts of the country in the days ahead.
